David Grissom

by David True

 After Camp

It’s truly an honor to be able to learn from some of Austin’s greatest musicians like Jeff Plankenhorn and David Grissom. Throw in a room full of talented students, John and Carol’s sublime space and, as if it could get any better, free beer, and you end up with Austin Band Camp.

David Grissom’s camp was extremely informative across a number of levels: guitar approaches, “cool” chord shapes, exercises David himself uses, songwriting, performing and he even brought handouts with guidance and actual chord shapes we can use (no thirds!) to spice up our playing.

The diversity in the songs participants brought to play with David was also impressive. I’m extremely humbled to see my Austin Band Camp dream realized and appreciated by our community.

David Grissom's Austin Band Camp was held on January 14, 2023.

"I really enjoyed my afternoon teaching at Austin Band camp. The warm, intimate space, and small group size are ideal for a great interactive learning experience!”

David Grissom

"I really enjoyed the David Grissom clinic at Austin Band Camp.

I went there to learn some new things and learned the night before that we’d get to play a tune with David. It was really a cool moment for me. I really enjoyed all the songs people brought as David played with us on all of them, and to say it was a diverse selection of songs is an understatement.

Catch any of David’s clinics if you can, I learned as much about songwriting and musicianship that day as I did about rhythm guitar playing.

Good times."

Many thanks to Kim Yarbrough for capturing the day!
